Wedehase Family | Kingsburg Lifestyle Photographer

Shinn Photo {hearts} the Wedehase family. We met at Jason and Rachel’s wedding, and we’ve been big fans ever since.  So, naturally, when they asked if we could make some Christmas Card pictures, we were excited.  They don’t go out of the house much, due to little Eli’s health.  Eli has Holt-Oram Syndrome, also known as Hand-Heart Syndrome.  It means he’s missing some genes, which has made life all kinds of tough for them.  But they bear it with buckets of grace, radiant faith, and no small amount of humor.  And Eli’s health, while part of their lives, is not the entirety of their lives.  I think that may be what I admire most about them: their very graceful sense of balance.  They have three beautiful children, each a gem.  Yep, we like the Wedehases a lot.  We hope you enjoy these pictures of them!

The Miller Family – Newborn Portraits

Shinn Photography photographs a lot of high school seniors but we also do a bit of newborn portrait work as well.  I enjoy all that I do behind the scenes as our Production Manager but photographing newborns gives me a chance to get out and be creative!  Each family and each child’s story is so unique; I am honored to be a part of sharing the beginning of a child’s story.

In the last couple of years we have had the privilege to photograph both of the Miller’s children as newborns.  Lynda, Shelly’s mom, has been at both of the sessions, which is kind of ironic because she lives out-of-state!  It was a nice surprise to see her again at Cohen’s session.  I’m sure it’s always a blessing to have another set of Grandma hands around when a family welcomes and adjusts to a new little baby.

It is so rewarding to Andrew and I when we are blessed to have a relationships with our clients; we enjoy Scott and Shelly.  They are a great couple!  They are also great parents and we look forward to watching Parker and Cohen as they grow.  It’s so fun to watch them interact with Parker, who is almost two.  Scott and Shelly are loving, flexible, caring, attentive, and super involved parents.  I can tell their kids mean so much to them!  Parker and Cohen are blessed to have such a special Daddy and Mommy!

Here are just a couple of images from Cohen’s newborn session.  He is a cutie!

Family Portraits

You’ve probably noticed the startling lack of family portraits here on the Shinn Photo blog. There’s a reason for that: I’m not into shooting large groups of people. Or, rather, I WASN’T into shooting large groups of people. But each time I do it, I lost a little bit of that fear. That was the case with the Boldwyn family, who also happens to be pseudo-related to me (through my twin brother, who numbers himself among their ranks). It’s not often that the entire Boldwyn family gets together, so we commemorated the occasion with a family portrait session. We went to the same place they had family portraits taken more than a decade ago. I had a great time with them, and still count myself fortunate that people are willing to let me into their lives. Here’s a video we made from the photos we created that day:

People I love

I love people.  Who are my favorite people?  Usually the people who are with me at any given moment.  That’s one thing I love about pictures: it allows me to have the people I love nearby all the time.  I have a simple, black-and-white canvas gallery wrap of each of my children next to my desk while I work.  While the pictures can’t replace them, they do constantly remind me of their character traits and the reasons I love them so much.  My fingers can’t reach them to pinch their little cheeks, but my heart can.

This morning I was out with the Sanchez family, enjoying a crisp, beautiful autumn morning.  Nature briefly pulled back her veil for us, and we enjoyed a nice morning playing near brilliant leaves and enjoying family relationships.  I like the picture below because it illustrates relationships in two planes: the first and more obvious is cute little Logan playing with grandma.  (Yes, Veronica is a grandma, even though she looks too young.)  And the second layer is the relationship that is happening in the background: more of a real-life adult-type interaction.  This second layer isn’t featured in pictures very often, and indeed in this case it was a bit of an artifact.  I knew I was making it, but I’m afraid my subjects weren’t aware they were going to be in the picture.  I’m glad it happened, though, because the shared time and space are just as much a testament to a family’s love as the smiling, playful baby.  Thanks, Sanchez family, for a fun morning and for letting me into your family relationships!

Babies and Love

I had the honor of making pictures with Alex and Jennifer and their new little one, Tristan.    I edited their session this morning while I was listening to some great worship music from Todd Proctor, the worship leader at Rock Harbor church in Costa Mesa.  I loved watching the relationship that Alex and Jenny have, and how much they enjoy Tristan.  A baby truly is a source of joy, and they overflow our hearts with love.  These pictures were a powerful reminder for me of how God loves us: with abandon and with an overflowing heart.  Thanks, Alex and Jenny, for letting me share in your relationships!

Significance

When you’re caught up in the day-to-day battle of pixels and dollars, it’s easy to forget why photography matters. I was brought back to the essential importance of photos this morning by Alma Perez, our the newest member of the Shinn Photo team. Last night, Lisa took pictures of Alma with her father, her husband, and her two beautiful kids. As I went through the pictures with Alma this morning, she told me stories about her father and his experiences. (If you know Alma, you know she LOVES stories!) Each line on her father’s face speaks of an experience, and some lines speak very specifically. Like the one that came from the bullet he pulled out of his own cheek when he was shot as an innocent bystander at a gun fight in Mexico years and years ago.

It’s an weighty privilege and a special honor that people allow us into their lives, and allow us to tell their stories and speak of their character with our photographs. Makes me want to work even harder and give not just my time and ability, but extra heart and caring into each product I’m able to make!

Below are pictures of Felipe and Alma with her two boys, Giovanni and Nathaniel. Happy Friday!

Tis the Season…

For family portraits. Families are getting together these days, and that makes it a great time to commission someone to make family portraits. I had a great time yesterday morning with the Deibert kids, who made some very special portraits for their mom. Here are two of my favorites from the session. Thanks, guys!

New addition to our family

At 2:30 am Saturday morning we welcomed Clara Marie Shinn to our family. She weighed in at 7 pounds, 14 ounces and measured 19.75 inches in length. She’s healthy and Lisa is doing well. We’re back at work this Monday working on orders for people who are giving Shinn Photo portraits as Christmas gifts. Here are a few pictures. Enjoy!

My Family Thanksgiving

I was with my family in Lodi again for Thanksgiving, and my favorite part was spending time with the people I love so much but don’t see every day. While I was there, I tried to be intentional about taking pictures of them.

This picture of my cousin Sarah and her husband Ricky is one of those photos. Sarah and Ricky are beloved relatives and dear friends (and they’re expecting their first baby!). This picture of them (which they’ll use for their Christmas Card picture), documents a unique and special time in their lives. You can almost see the glow and excitement of new pregnancy on Sarah’s face. I’m really glad we took just a few minutes to take these pictures.  (Ricky and Sarah are going to have wonderful-looking kids.  Congrats, you guys!)

I also spent time with my grandfather going through old family photos.  He showed me pictures of his parents and grandparents.  Long after my ancestors are gone, my grandpa is passing me a heritage and legacy with those photos.  They’re not artfully made like so many pictures we make today, but they speak of the character and lives of the people depicted.  My grandpa is able to tell me so much about those people, and some of it is history that was passed on to him with the pictures.  He wasn’t around for his mother’s childhood: her looks and those of her young family can only be passed to him through the photos they created and kept.

As you’re spending time with your family this holiday season, remember to enjoy them and treasure the times you share.  And don’t forget to take some pictures of have some really nice ones made.  Much more than all the X-Box games sold this Christmas season, those photos are part of your legacy.
