We had a great time at Summer Camera Camp this weekend! It was a smaller group of people (6), which gave us more time to deep-dive on questions and take the material at a less-hurried pace.
Anyone who teaches anything will be familiar with this feeling, but I really loved watching the camera campers’ progress from the first to the third day. At first, we all started out holding these mind-numbingly confusing pieces of technology. By the third day, people were asking questions with terms like ‘F/stops’ and ‘shutter speed’ instead of ‘doo-hicky’ and ‘mystery button.’
Two more notes on teaching: Every time we run camera camp, I’m reminded that if you really want to learn something inside and out, you should attempt to teach it to someone. Even though I’ve been a photographer for almost 1o years, I still have to work to have the correct terms and explanations ready at the proper times. Second, teaching photography reminds me how much I really love it! When you do something day in and day out, it can become routine and second-nature. When I watch someone catch on to a principal or technique, I re-capture a little bit of my own photographic passion.
Below are a few photos from the camp. Stay tuned for another round in the winter!

Here Cari gets creative, looking for a new perspective.

We worked on panning and zooming as creative exposure techniques.

We stopped in at Eddie V’s Barber Shop for the ambiance and a piece of bubble gum!

Here’s a picture of the Hotel Burgess, turned into a beautiful flower using nothing but a slow shutter speed and an unsteady hand!

Camera campers work on their depth of field assignment.

Each camera camper gets a guidebook for taking notes and later reference. We also have a few treats for each person!
